Arrests made in Sept. 3 near-campus robbery

Police have charged two suspects with the gunpoint robbery of five men on Sept. 3 on the 100 block of Smith Lane. Police continue to investigate whether these two suspects are the men responsible for the five on- and near-campus robberies of Syracuse University and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry students in September, said Sgt. Tom Connellan of the Syracuse Police Department.

‘It is similar to some of the robberies,’ Connellan said. ‘Our investigation is continuing to determine if they are connected to the other robberies.’

No SU nor ESF students were involved in the Sept. 3 robbery, Connellan said. But four days later, an ESF student was also robbed on the 100 block of Smith Lane, according to an article The Daily Orange published Sept. 9.

The two suspects, Nathaniel Flagg, 17, and Glen Hicks, 19, are being held in the Onondaga County Justice Center. Both are charged with robbery in the first degree and are held on $15,000 bail, according to Justice Center records.

The five men who were robbed were outside on the 100 block of Smith Lane when Flagg and Hicks came toward them. One brandished a handgun. Sgt. Connellan declined to provide further details of the Sept. 3 robbery because the police investigation is still underway.

Connellan did not elaborate on the leads or the next step in the investigation. More information could be available later this week, he said.

Flagg was also involved in an April 6, 2008 robbery of an SU student. Flagg, then 16, was charged with attempted robbery, Connellan said. Connellan could not provide information on the current status of that case.

On April 6, 2008, two men robbed a third-year SU student as he walked from his apartment to a bus stop on the corner of Comstock Avenue and East Colvin Street, according to an article The Daily Orange published April 7, 2008.

The third-year student saw four or five men walking and then noticed two men start to follow him near the 1100 block of Comstock Avenue. He crossed the street to avoid the two men but was attacked from behind at an intersection near Manley Field House, The Daily Orange reported.

Two SU students were driving on Comstock Avenue as the third-year student was choked, kicked and punched. They stopped to check on the third-year student and drove him to report the incident, The Daily Orange reported.

One of the two men, a 16-year-old Syracuse resident, was arrested for attempted robbery in the second degree shortly after the incident, The Daily Orange reported.
