Following Syracuse’s two-game weekend series with Colgate, SU defender Laura Leitner earned Atlantic Hockey America Rookie of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday. The freshman from Krumpendorf, Austria, scored her first career goal on her first career shot as the Orange fell to No. 5 Colgate 3-1 Friday.
In just her 10th appearance of her college career Friday, Leitner scored a goal that may be hard to top in her next four years at Syracuse. She received the puck from Nea Tervonen just inside the blue line and blasted a long-range snapshot past Colgate goalkeeper Hannah Murphy. The goal momentarily leveled the contest at 1-1, though SU would go on to drop the game.
Leitner stayed off the score sheet Saturday as the Orange were crushed 7-1 in Hamilton, yet she continued to establish herself as a budding star in Syracuse’s defensive rotation.
