Syracuse had plenty of chances to win across two overtime periods.

In the first overtime, the Orange posted five shots on goal, which were all saved by Demon Deacons’ goalkeeper Ellie Todd. Then, they registered another five shots in the second overtime, but Wake Forest blocked two of them. A shot from Charlotte de Vries sailed wide left with less than 30 seconds remaining in double-overtime, sending the game into a shootout.

“There’s going to be saves,” SU head coach Lynn Farquhar said postgame. “Give credit to Wake (Forest) for having some big saves in those moments.”

No. 10 Syracuse (10-6, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) went on to fall in the penalty shootout to Wake Forest (7-8, 1-5 ACC) in a 2-1 defeat. The Orange put up nine shots on target compared to the Demon Deacons’ six, but failed to capitalize with consistency. A goal early in the third quarter from Willemijn Boogert brought SU back to even with WF. Then, in both overtimes, Syracuse struggled to find success on multiple clean chances.

Over a minute into the first overtime, Syracuse had a penalty corner. De Vries controlled the insertion and fired a shot, but Todd thwarted the chance and possession was controlled by Wake Forest. Then, 2:19 into the period, Hattie Madden hit a shot while sliding right. Todd again got in the way and made the stop, her third save in less than a minute.

Two minutes later, WF’s Mia Schoenbeck was given a yellow card, which awarded the Orange a 7-on-6 player advantage. Up a woman, Boogert found herself in a fastbreak on a counterattack. One-on-one with Todd, she dribbled and fired a backhanded shot from the left center circle. Todd made another save on Boogert’s attempt, ending SU’s chance.

Continuing to apply pressure, Syracuse obtained possession around midfield and Cato Schreinemacher found herself in range for a shot on goal. She patiently crept toward the cage and darted left. She took a shot from along the side of the net that Todd saved — her fifth of the period.

SU’s lack of efficiency nearly caught up with it near the end of the first overtime. The Demon Deacons stole possession in the Orange’s territory and Ashley Hart was wide open driving toward the cage. She ran at Syracuse goalkeeper Abby Neitch and fired a shot. Neitch controlled the attempt, ending the initial overtime.

In the second overtime, the Orange kept on receiving chances but had nothing to show for them. Nearly one minute into the period, Lieke Leeggangers drew a penalty corner. Off the corner, Eefke van den Nieuwenhof had space for a shot that got blocked. But, Syracuse got another corner due to a Wake Forest infraction. Van den Nieuwenhof earned another shot, but Todd made the stop.

Yet, another foul by WF kept Syracuse on offense. Van den Nieuwenhof received the insertion and passed to de Vries, whose shot was corralled by Todd, continuing her strong overtime stretch of play.

Van den Nieuwenhof and de Vries combined for eight shots in the game, with four on goal. Although, they couldn’t finish. In the ensuing penalty shootout, Wake Forest held a 5-4 lead and van den Nieuwenhof had a chance to tie it. But, her initial penalty stroke was stuffed by Todd and an opportunity off a rebound was thwarted as well, sealing the victory for Wake Forest.
