After leadoff batter Carli Campbell walked, freshman Tessa Galipeau stepped up to the plate with no outs in the bottom of the first. Galipeau hit a rocket to deep center field to put Syracuse up 2-0.

Galipeau set the tone for the rest of the day, as the Orange ended up leading the Hornets 11-0 by the third inning. Syracuse (8-2) finished up the Tarleton Softball Invitational with a 11-3 win over Alabama State (4-7). This wraps up a 3-2 weekend for the Orange, where the team lost in walkoff fashion to both Tarleton State and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. Syracuse beat the Islanders on Friday and Prairie View A&M on Saturday afternoon.

Pitcher Lindsey Hendrix struck out half the batters she faced and only gave up two hits through four innings.

Following Galipeau’s two run homer, Kelly Breen doubled to center and then Angel Jasso put down a bunt that pitcher Bailey Greenlee couldn’t get ahold of. Neli Casares-Maher homered to center field, giving the Orange a five-run lead.

After Hendrix threw another three-batter inning to start the third, Syracuse got hot at the plate again. Jasso singled up the middle to start the inning. Then Casares-Maher hit another single but a wild throw to first base sent her to second and Jasso to third. Freshman Taylor Posner tripled deep to right field, which scored two runs to put Syracuse up by eight. Following Posner’s triple, fellow freshman Laila Alves hit an RBI double in the left-center gap. Left fielder Olivia Pess continued the rally and homered to right field to give the Orange an 11-0 lead heading into the fourth.

Kaia Oliver replaced Hendrix in the fifth inning to close out the game. After the first two batters singled, Hornets catcher Kat McGlamry hit a single to right field but tried to stretch it to second base and got thrown out. Elizabeth Williams advanced to third and Aishja Wilcher scored Alabama State’s first run of the day. The next at bat, Oliver hit Leah Richardson with a pitch to put runners on the corners. Then, Arianna Atchley singled to center field to score two more runs.

Now up just 11-3, the Orange needed to shut out the Hornets to keep the five-inning mercy rule win. Zoee Disroe reached first after Yamila Evans mishandled a ball hit to second but Oliver fanned freshman Alexia Denby to end the game.
