Journalist Maria Ressa was chosen as the 2018 recipient of the Tully Award for Free Speech and will accept the award at a ceremony on April 24, Syracuse University announced on Monday.

Ressa has more than 30 years of experience as a journalist in Asia, according to a SU news release. She was bureau chief in Manila and Jakarta for CNN, and as a lead investigative reporter for CNN, Ressa reported on terrorism in Southeast Asia, per the release.

Students and faculty from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications award The Tully Award for Free Speech to journalists who “faced significant turmoil” in the year prior, according to the release. Ressa was harassed, indicted and arrested while covering Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte, per the release.

In 2012, Ressa worked with others to found Rappler, an online news organization in the Philippines, per the release. She now serves as the Rappler’s executive editor and CEO, according to the release. She is also the co-founder of independent production company Probe and in 2005, she managed ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, the largest news organization in the Philippines, per the release.

Ressa has received several other awards, including the Golden Pen of Freedom Award from the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, the Journalist of Courage and Impact Award from East-West Center and the Knight International Journalism Award from the International Center for Journalists, according to the release.
