Senior’s style brings punk inspirations into classroom

Taylyn Washington-Harmon | Staff Writer

Alice Blank said she gets inspiration for her style from '90s riot girl punk, and cites the Cluttered Closet as one of her favorite thrift stores in Syracuse.

Inspired by ’90s riot girl punk, Alice Blank brings retro prints and clothing combinations to the classroom.

The senior English and textual studies and illustration double major sports a mix of argyle tights and plaid flannel. Blank added high-waisted, sailor-inspired shorts and a basic tank. To complete the look she added a wide-brimmed hat and oxford-style shoes.

Blank is a fan of thrift shopping, looking to vintage stores to create the ’90s cool girl looks that she seeks to emulate. Cluttered Closet on Westcott is one of her favorite spots in Syracuse for thrifting.

She said that as an artist, she feels she can get a “little weird” with her style and not be judged. Blank reminisced on disagreeing with her mom often about clothing choices. But Blank wouldn’t say she is a fashion aficionado — she simply wears what feels good.

Blank would describe her personal style as “crumbling punk,” given that a lot of her clothing is falling apart. If given 15 minutes to get ready, she’d wear her signature choker, a big sweater, leggings and tall boots. For makeup, Blank adds just a swipe of mascara and eyeliner and she’s out the door.
