Election 2016

Cruz, Sanders win Wisconsin primaries

Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) won the Republican and Democratic primaries, respectively, in Wisconsin on Tuesday night.

Coming in first in the Wisconsin Republican primary, Cruz garnered 49.5 percent of the vote. Business mogul Donald Trump came in second with 33.6 percent of the vote and Ohio Gov. John Kasich was last with 14.4 percent, as of 11:35 p.m. on Tuesday.

This win for Cruz added 33 delegates to his count, giving him a total of 514 delegates.

Cruz trails business mogul Donald Trump, who has a delegate count of 740, by just more than 200 delegates. In order to win the GOP nomination for president, the candidates need 1,237 delegates in total.

Sanders beat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the Wisconsin primary with 55.9 percent of the vote. Clinton received 43.8 percent of the vote, as of 11:35 p.m.

Even though Sanders gained 45 more delegates from Wisconsin’s primary, Clinton still leads in the Democratic delegate count with 1,743 delegates — 31 of those from Wisconsin’s primary — to Sanders’ 1,056. Both need 2,382 delegates to win the Democratic presidential nomination.

The next primary for the Democratic candidates will be held in Wyoming on Saturday, and the next primary for the Republican candidates is New York’s on April 19.
