Morgan out for Notre Dame game

Wayne Morgan will not play in Syracuse’s 8 p.m. kickoff against Notre Dame on Saturday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. He is not on the travel roster, SU associate athletics director for communications Sue Edson confirmed.

The junior cornerback from Brooklyn was seen on campus Saturday afternoon on crutches. He played in the Orange’s first two games of the year.

On Thursday, Orange head coach Scott Shafer said Morgan had a knee problem that was being checked out that day.

“They’re actually going in there today to take a look at it to see what they need to do,” Shafer said during his weekly press conference Thursday. “We don’t know how severe it is. We think it’s something they could possibly clean up and get him back. But you never know until you go in there.”

When asked, Shafer said he wouldn’t specify on who would take Morgan’s reps. Corey Winfield is the only other non-starting cornerback listed on the SU Athletics website who has played this year.

“Wayne was improving and he was kind of that third guy in the rotation,” Shafer said, “but now you adjust to the elements and get that next guy in there and give him an opportunity to play.”
