La L.U.C.H.A, HASA to discuss controversial Hispaniola ruling
Collaborating Syracuse University student organizations, the Haitian American Student Association and Latin Undergraduates Creating History in America, have come together to bring “One Mother, One Island, Two Identities: No Reason For Conflict” to the university campus on Sunday, April 6, to discuss the tensions that exist on the island of Hispaniola. The event will be held in room 304 ABC in the Schine Student Center located on 303 University Place, Syracuse, N.Y., at 2 p.m.
With the participation of guest panelists Dr. Yveline Alexis, an Oberlin College assistant professor, Gerald McElroy, a development director of the nonprofit Yspaniola and Syracuse University professor, Dr. Silvio Torres-Saillant, the organizations plan to highlight the past and present legal, cultural, economic and political relationship between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. This workshop is in response to the controversial ruling of the Dominican constitutional tribunal that strips citizenship from Dominicans of Haitian descent born in the Dominican Republic after 1929, affecting over 250,000 people.
We cordially invite you to learn, participate and explore the notions of race, citizenship and advocacy in not only the context of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, but in the context of the world. As the issues highlighted in this island will raise a wider conversation about our role as global citizens when it comes to human rights violations due to race, cultural differences and governmental relations. Consequently through this event we seek to not only educate and raise awareness on the issues discussed above, but to move toward solidarity and coexistence within one island, one motherland, where there should be no reasons for conflict.
