Seth Meyers from SNL to perform standup comedy at SU
Live from Syracuse, it’s Seth Meyers.
Comedian Seth Meyers will perform his stand-up act in Goldstein Auditorium on Wednesday for University Union’s “An Evening of Comedy with Seth Meyers.” Doors open at 7 p.m.
Meyers has been a “Saturday Night Live” cast member for the past 11 seasons. This is his sixth season as both head writer and anchor of the skit, “Weekend Update.”
“SNL” is an award-winning, live sketch-comedy show on NBC. The show is widely anticipated every week for its various celebrity hosts and musical guests. Everyone who is anyone has hosted “SNL,” including Justin Bieber, Daniel Radcliffe and Mick Jagger.
Anchoring “Weekend Update” is a segment for which Meyers is most widely recognized. It is a parody-style news segment in which the 39-year-old New Yorker re-hashes the week’s news with one-liners and ironic quips.
Meyers has worked on the show alongside other familiar, famous entertainers like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. He helped the duo co-write the famous series of Sarah Palin sketches.
The Northwestern University graduate hosted the 2011 ESPY Awards on ESPN and headlined the 2011 White House Correspondents Association Dinner.
Sophomore Taylor O’Brien, an undeclared major in the College of Arts and Sciences, said she ran to get her Meyers ticket from the Schine Box Office the first day they went on sale. The event was sold out within three days of the announcement.
O’Brien said she first started watching “SNL” when she was a child simply because — like many — her parents always had it on television every Saturday night. Now, O’Brien watches largely because Meyers is the brain behind the jokes.
“I think that’s the only reason I watch (‘SNL’) now,” she said.
O’Brien said she has never seen Meyers perform live before, which is why she hopes to sit in the front row for his performance.
“I’m so excited,” said O’Brien. “I just want to laugh for two hours straight, and I know I will.”
